How Incorporating Feedback Mechanisms in a DSS Affects DSS Evaluations
نویسندگان
چکیده
M decision support systems (DSS) improve performance in many contexts that are data-rich, uncertain, and require repetitive decisions. But such DSS are often not designed to help users understand and internalize the underlying factors driving DSS recommendations. Users then feel uncertain about DSS recommendations, leading them to possibly avoid using the system. We argue that a DSS must be designed to induce an alignment of a decision maker’s mental model with the decision model embedded in the DSS. Such an alignment requires effort from the decision maker and guidance from the DSS. We experimentally evaluate two DSS design characteristics that facilitate such alignment: (i) feedback on the upside potential for performance improvement and (ii) feedback on corrective actions to improve decisions. We show that, in tandem, these two types of DSS feedback induce decision makers to align their mental models with the decision model, a process we call deep learning, whereas individually these two types of feedback have little effect on deep learning. We also show that deep learning, in turn, improves user evaluations of the DSS. We discuss how our findings could lead to DSS design improvements and better returns on DSS investments.

Grading, no longer an obstacle to learners’ attendance to teacher feedback
Learners are often reported not to be motivated enough to attend to teacher feedback. Teachers also tend to grade learners’ writing samples when providing them with corrective feedback though they know it may divert their attention away from teacher feedback. However, not grading learner writings does not seem to be an option due to both learners’ demands for it and ins...
متن کاملA Preliminary Framework for Feedback Mechanism Design in Extended Decision Support Systems-Implications of a Literature Review
To help humans in making decisions, decision support system (DSS) commonly apply concepts based on logic and mathematics which are often perceived as hard to handle. Feedback mechanisms providing decisional guidance are suggested to be viable means to solve the problem and render DSS into extended DSS. While known to be effective to enhance decision making in a more human centric way, guiding f...
متن کاملDSS Effectiveness in Marketing Resource Allocation Decisions: Reality vs. Perception
W study the process by which model-based decision support systems (DSSs) influence managerial decision making in the context of marketing budgeting and resource allocation. We focus on identifying whether and how DSSs influence the decision process (e.g., cognitive effort deployed, discussion quality, and decision alternatives considered) and, as a result, how these DSSs influence decision outc...
متن کاملMotivating the Unmotivated: Making Teacher Corrective Feedback Work
It is often wrongly assumed that the provision of teacher corrective feedback naturally entails learners' attendance to and application of it, but learners have repeatedly been reported not to pay attention to teacher feedback due to lack of motivation and the distracting effect of the grades they receive. The present study was an attempt to tackle this problem. To do so, the technique named Dr...
متن کاملIncorporating critique and argumentation in DSS
Ž . This paper proposes a framework for a decision support system DSS based on critique and argumentation. We make a distinction between positive and negative types of critique and argue that both of them are valuable in making substantiated decisions. We further propose use of debate and argumentation as means for more informative decision support. We discuss the types of knowledge used for cr...
